Legend says that St. Valentine was a Roman priest who was martyred for refusing to stop marrying solders to their loves at a time when it was against the law for solders to marry. And the idea of sending a valentine started because he left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine".
